Bucklands beach - East Auckland

I am interested in being part of a Bucklands beach or Eastern Beach Transition Towns.  I do not really know how to get started....Manuaku is our greater group so I will look there first but if any one is in the East it would be good to be more focused....

How to get started

If you have been living in the area for a while, you will have some friends you can begin with. From there, they will have another circle of friends. This is a good place to start.

Invite them over for a conversation and a screening of "this amazing film I watched the other day, that I think you may be interested in. It was rather shocking, but I'm glad I am aware of the issues and now want to see what we can do as a local community, in response."

I think the issue of Peak Oil is much more accessible now than it was 2 years ago. So you may not need to spend a lot of time on that. Peak Oil: Imposed by Nature is a good title - it's only 30 mins and leaves time for some discussion and then some video inspiration from Rob Hopkins at the International Forum on Globalisation. Heather and David in Manukau could copy you a CD with both these video resources on it, and some that are mentioned here in the "Start your own TT" Their skype name is: heather.and.david - they don't have a landline number. It would be good to have The Transition Handbook as a reference and inspiration, as well as a source of valuable information.

There's nothing complicated about it, the framework and support is all available. Take some steps, ask some questions, and watch it unfold.

  • The Transition Initiatives Primer as well as being an very good outline of the process and development of a Transition Town initiative, gives a list of films and describes the screening rights are for each one. This first event can be a screening on a TV at yours or someone else's home. Offering a bit of food and some refreshments will entice people to come.
  • The 12 Steps, 7 But's, and The Criteria are also very helpful and a summary of these can be found on the files page under Resources tab (above)

I hope this helps,

James
